Is my disability insurance from the government and my employer enough to protect me?

If you have coverage through your employer or through government programs such as Social Security and workers’ compensation, you might think that you are already sufficiently insured against disability. Remember that only 50% of employers cover short-term disability, and only 40% cover long-term disability. Government programs will only pay you benefits if you meet a strict definition of disability.

For Social Security, you shouldn’t overlook the disability benefits you may be eligible to receive. You shouldn’t rely on them either. Do you know that Social Security denies more than 50% of the claims submitted, in part due to its strict definition of disability? If you will be deemed eligible for benefits, you still won’t begin receiving such benefits until at least six months after you become disabled. This is because of the reason that Social Security imposes a waiting period. Your benefit may therefore replace only a fraction of your pre-disability income.

You may also receive some disability benefits from workers’ compensation
If you’re injured at work or get sick from job-related causes, from workers’ compensation insurance. How much you will receive as benefits will depend on the state you live in. When you have to review your disability insurance needs, workers’ compensation should only pay benefits if your disability is work-related. Therefore, such would offer limited disability protection. Some states would also cover only the diseases and/or disabilities which are outlined in the compensation laws.

Some government and private pension plans will pay disability benefits to you. These plans pay benefits based on permanent disability, total, or reduce your retirement benefit in proportion to what you have already received as disability benefits. These benefits are most commonly integrated with Social Security or workers’ compensation. This means that your benefit may be less than what you expect if you also receive disability income from these government sources.

Just try to check is currently covered as dependent under your health insurance plan in Joliet IL. If she is, you can call your health insurance company if she can still remain on the plan as a full-time student. There are some health insurance companies that allow dependent children to remain on their parents’ health insurance coverage as long as they are still in school as fill time students. Although, there can be some health insurance companies which have age limits normally up to 22 and drop off from health insurance coverage the dependents at the age of 23 whether or not they are full time students.

Just be very careful though if you have the HMO type of health insurance plan. If your health insurance is an HMO and your daughter is also covered by that HMO, you should check and make sure your daughter will not have any trouble reaching HMO providers especially if it is an out-of-state. A common problem for HMOs that covers out of state is the difficulty of the policyholder to find a doctor or hospital that accepts the HMO in another state.

Although, most colleges and universities also offer their own health insurance plans which can sometimes be expensive though. Some student health insurance plans of other schools are also reasonably priced and shall have doctors, hospitals, and other providers readily accessible from the school. This might be another possibility that you would like to consider for your child’s health insurance policy.
